Mission Statement

In 2009, Arts in the Cathedral celebrates its 13th season of providing cultural events and classes for Church of the Saviour and the greater Cleveland community. Their mission is to honor the Creator through creativity in music, drama, needlework, dance, creative writing and the visual arts.

Six guilds provide the framework for the work of the AITC. Each Guild is guided by a Chairperson and is open to participation by all members of the Church of the Saviour.

Arts in the Cathedral: The Six Guilds

Music Guild - Marilyn Meadows, Chair

The Music Guild presents vocal and instrumental concerts. The Guild sponsors the annual Young Artists Competition (Paul Omelsky, Chair) which began in 2004 as a way to provide recognition and encouragement for serious young musicians in northeast Ohio.

The Competition invites instrumentalists in grades 10-12 whose permanent home is in northern Ohio and who have had at least three and one-half years of private study to apply for the competition.

Needlework Guild - Patricia Cermak, Chair

The Needlework Guild creates projects to enhance our worship spaces and is open to anyone who has an interest in needlework. Some of the Guild's recent projects include:

    • Needlepointed kneelers at the communion rail representing the twelve apostles
    • Needlepointed chairseats for the ministerial chairs in the sanctuary and the chapel
    • Embroidered Bible bookmarks for the Confirmation Class members each year
    • Pew bonnets for Sanctuary pews

A subgroup of this Guild and the UMW is the Prayer Shawl Ministry which has distributed over 120 shawls to those in need of comfort or at a time of rejoicing. Regular workshops are scheduled to prepare the shawls. Penny Belden is Chair of the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

Liturgical Dance - Carol Griffith, Chair

The Dance Guild interprets scripture and sacred music through liturgical dance, and performs in worship services several times a year. The group has sponsored liturgical dance workshops with guest choreographers, as well as a session at this year's district leadership training conference.

Visual Arts Guild - Joan Angle, Chair

The Visual Arts Guild presents art exhibits at the church with subjects such as multimedia works by church members and friends, Mayan embroidery and a special exhibit of prints as part of the Viktor Schreckengost National Centennial Exhibition. The group also sponsors workshops such as flower arranging and leatherworking.
