Arts in the Cathedral
Mission Statement
In 2007, Arts in the Cathedral celebrates its 11th season of providing cultural events and classes for Church of the Saviour and the greater Cleveland community. Their mission is to honor the Creator through creativity in music, drama, needlework, dance and the visual arts.
Five guilds provide the framework for the work of the AITC. Each Guild is guided by a Chairman and is open to participation by all members of the Church of the Saviour.
This year's Arts in the Cathedral officers are Penny Belden, President; Debbie Drew, Vice President; Marylou Sykora, Secretary; and Rich Hiles, Treasurer. Bob Buchs and Julianne McKinzie are at-large members of the board.

Echowood - October 28
Flutist Virginia Steiger and percussionist Timothy Strelau perform an imaginative program of classical and global music beginning at 3:00 p.m.
New Inspirations - November 11-18
A multi-media art exhibit featuring new works from the studios of church members and friends.
"Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Gian Carlo Menotti - December 7-8
This beloved Christmas story of a visit by the Three Kings to a poor widow and her son appeals to both children and adults. Sung in English by a professional cast; 45 minutes in length. Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 youth (18 and under).
Young Artists Showcase - February 10, 2008
Northeast Ohio's most talented high school instrumentalists will compete before a live audience in this final round of the Young Artists Competition beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Chorus Robert Porco, Conductor - March 30, 2008
The Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Chorus performs an exciting program under the direction of Robert Porco, Director of Choruses with the Cleveland Orchestra. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 youth (18 and under).
Dance Workshop - Saturday, April 5 from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Dance educator Ida Porris leads a theater and dance workshop from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Registration is $20 for adults and $10 teens (14 and older).
Word Inspired Design - April 12-20, 2008
Panama artist Gloria Ritter's prints vividly blend literary and visual arts to convey not only the written word but also emotions, colors and images in this spring art exhibit.
Spring Concert - April 20, 2008

Arts in the Cathedral: The Five Guilds
Music Guild - Marilyn Meadows, Chair
The Music Guild presents vocal and instrumental concerts. The Guild sponsors the annual Young Artists Competition (Paul Omelsky, Chair) which began in 2004 as a way to provide recognition and encouragement for serious young musicians in northeast Ohio.
The Competition invites instrumentalists in grades 10-12 whose permanent home is in northern Ohio and who have had at least three and one-half years of private study to apply for the competition.

Students must submit a completed application, audition tape and other materials by December 31. After an initial screening process, approved applicants will be invited to participate in live auditions where the judges will select approximately eight winners. Judges include members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Winners will perform a selection at the Young Artists' Showcase Recital at Church of the Saviour each spring. Each winner also receives a cash prize. The application and audition bulletin are available in the church office.
Drama Guild - Richard Meadows, Chair and Mike Piepenburg, Vice Chair
The Drama Guild presents plays and sponsors an acting class for both young people and adults The Guild also staged Arthur Miller's The Crucible in 2006 and is planning their next production for the winter of 2008.
Needlework Guild - Patricia Cermak, Chair
The Needlework Guild creates projects to enhance our worship spaces and is open to anyone who has an interest in needlework. Some of the Guild's recent projects include:
- Needlepointed kneelers at the communion rail representing the twelve apostles
- Needlepointed chairseats for the ministerial chairs in the sanctuary and the chapel
- Embroidered Bible bookmarks for the Confirmation Class members each year
- Pew bonnets for Sanctuary pews
A subgroup of this Guild and the UMW is the Prayer Shawl Ministry which has distributed over 120 shawls to those in need of comfort or at a time of rejoicing. Regular workshops are scheduled to prepare the shawls. Penny Belden is Chair of the Prayer Shawl Ministry.
Liturgical Dance - Carol Griffith, Chair
The Dance Guild interprets scripture and sacred music through liturgical dance, and performs in worship services several times a year. The group has sponsored liturgical dance workshops with guest choreographers, as well as a session at this year's district leadership training conference.
Visual Arts Guild - Lissette Piepenburg, Chair
The Visual Arts Guild presents art exhibits at the church with subjects such as multimedia works by church members and friends, Mayan embroidery and a special exhibit of prints as part of the Viktor Schreckengost National Centennial Exhibition. The group also sponsors workshops such as flower arranging and leatherworking.
