Closer Than You Think!

Jeremiah 33:14-16 & Luke 21:25-36

First Sunday in Advent - Dr. Yoost preaches on the theme, “Closer Than You Think!” Christmas is the story of a God who loves us enough to interrupt us, a God who loves us enough to intervene.  Advent reminds us to get ready for the interruption!

Citizens of Two Kingdoms

John 18:33-37

Thanksgiving Sunday & Festival of Christ the King.  Dr. Yoost preaches on the theme, “Citizens of Two Kingdoms.” To Pilate’s question, “Are you a king?”  Jesus reponds by saying that his kingdom is not of this world.  What does it mean to be a both a citizen of a country here on earth, and also a citizen of kingdom of God?  Is Caesar or Jesus our Lord?  Where do our ultimate loyalties lie?

Something New is Coming!

Mark 13:1-8

Dr. Yoost preaches on the theme “Something New Is Coming!” Although discouraging circumstances abound (the recession, a swine flu epidemic, murders at Fort Hood, Texas, and in Cleveland), God is still at work!  The pain we feel is the beginning of the birth pangs of a whole new world that God has promised and is creating.

Parading, Sharing and Caring

Mark 12:38-44

Reverend Mark Steiger suggests that many in today’s culture spend their time parading around in their metaphoric long robes seeking places of honor at the banquet tables.  In this sermon we are challenged to do less parading and more sharing and caring.  We, the “scribes,” must care for the “poor widows” amongst us, so they will not be required to give “all they have to live on.”

Treasure in Clay Jars

Jeremiah 18:1-6; II Corinthians 4:7-9, 16-5:1; Revelation 21:1-6

All Saints Day - Sunday, November 1, 2009 - Dr. Charles Yoost preaches on the theme, “Treasure in Clay Jars.” In the ancient world people placed things in clay jars they wished to preserve.  Where do we keep things we want to preserve?  A safe deposit box, a bank vault?  We may have valuable heirlooms, but the our most precious treasures are the memories of our loved ones in our hearts.  Even when memory fades, God’s love does not.  God promises new life, both to those who die and those who survive.  Just as the potter can remold a piece of clay, so God can re-form us after the death of a loved one.
