What in the world is Taizè???

by Rev. Mark Steiger

Perhaps you are one of those people who have often wondered about Taizè worship. Perhaps you have thought to yourself: "What in the world is Taizè?" Taizè evolved over the last 60 years as a worship style used by a community of Christians in Taizè, France. Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche, founder of the Taizè community, was the son of a Swiss Protestant pastor. He was also heavily influenced by his maternal grandmother who, during World War I, sought peace and reconciliation among all Christians. Inspired by his grandmother's faith and devotion, Roger settled in Taizè, France in 1940 and started a community in ministry to war refugees. In 1944, as Allied war efforts were successful, Brother Roger's ministry shifted from aid to French refugees to assistance and compassion for German prisoners of war. After the war ended, the community at Taizè evolved into a center for peace and reconciliation among Christians of all denominations.

During the 1950's, Taizè became an especially popular destination for young people seeking spiritual growth and renewal. Today, the Taizè community hosts 3,000-5,000 youth a week, who travel from around the world to spend a week in contemplation, meditation and prayer. Taizè style worship is characterized by prayer and silence in a candle-lit environment. Bible readings and meditations are brief with significant time for both meditation and reflection. Music is simple, in a style that might be called a cross between 13th century chant and contemporary folk song. Most importantly, Taizè worship is a time for centering and renewal, a time of quiet and peace.

Church of the Saviour conducts a worship service in the style of Taizè on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in our sanctuary. All are invited.
